This activation was a particularly powerful and emotional one for me for a number of reasons, one of which was having the opportunity to reconnect with Iris Nemani who I had the distinct pleasure of working with when she held the role of Managing director of the Toronto Pan American Games unprecedented 35-day Panamania Art Festival. What I also found incredible was the remarkable diversity of engagement that took place.
A couple made up of a Haitian man and Jamaican woman came with their two young children, while 3 elderly women, all from different Caribbean nations. gathered in excitement to see their homelands all represented together. A young lady from Brooklyn poured out her heart regarding her feeling a great sense of belonging will exploring the activation. And some folks saw the work while passing on a streetcar and got off at the next stop to double back and see the exhibit.
All and all it was an honour to activate the Marilyn Brewer Community Space at Harbourfront Centre as it allowed for a night and day, inside and outside experience of YOUNG WORLD FACES for the thousands of guests who attended the Island Soul Festival.
