Commissioned by Mayor Muriel Bowser, #MuralsDC51 presents 51 images across all 8 wards of Washington DC in commemoration of the historic vote for statehood that passed on June 6, 2020. I was asked to contribute 8 of those images on the Historic Howard Theatre under the themes of statehood and equality. It became the first time in the theatre’s 110 year history that artwork would be affixed to its historic exterior.
“When the nation was deeply divided by segregation, The Howard Theatre provided a place where color barriers blurred and music unified. Dubbed the “Theatre for The People” by The Washington Bee, it was the place where dignitaries like President Franklin D. Roosevelt gathered with everyday folks to see both superstars and rising stars – many of whom debuted at The Howard Theatre.” Source: TheHowardTheatre.com
It is only fitting that the image “No Fear”, the centerpiece of the Unmask Fear campaign, was the first image of the activation to be installed on to the Howard. The quote written on the mask that reads “Nothing to fear but fear itself,” is said to be coined by FDR himself.
